Designed in the early 20th century by J.C. Nichols, Kansas City’s Brookside community includes some of the city’s most convenient and unique shopping areas. Located in the heart of the city, just south of the Country Club Plaza, the neighborhood extends from 50th Street south to Gregory. It is bordered by Ward Parkway on the west and Troost Avenue on the east.
In Brookside, young and mid-career professionals live and recreate alongside active retirees. Families with children also enjoy calling Brookside home as there are several excellent schools as well as parks and biking/jogging trails in the area.
Parents can choose from over 30 different area schools for young children. Local grade schools and secondary institutions here include Academie Lafayette, St. Peter’s School, St. Teresa’s Academy, The Pembroke Hill School and University Academy. College and university students are also drawn to Brookside. The campus of the University of Missouri Kansas City is located in the neighborhood, and Rockhust University, a local Jesuit institution, is located just east of Brookside.
Banks, grocers, bakeries, unique retail shops and plenty of restaurants can be found in Brookside. Originally designed as an upscale oasis in a bustling city, the area retains the charm that many similar locations have lost. Neighborhood bars tend to be quieter than those in other parts of Kansas City and attract an older, more settled crowd.
Residents here enjoy easy access to transportation thanks to the Kansas City Area Transit Authority (KCATA). Metro buses run to and from Brookside throughout the week. Drivers will note that parking is readily available throughout the neighborhood, and commuters can easily access major thoroughfares from this historic residential area and shopping district.
